Dean of Admissions. This in-
crease gives GCC an enrollment
of 12,300 for the fall semester.

in half of your classes, if you
withdraw from half of them you
could be placed on probation.

about 300 students have taken
advantage of W’s and “have been

which instructors would flunk out
25 percent of their students in

Arizona State University

of Arizona has required a 1.4

1.55 for 25 to 55 hours of credit

personal appearances in hope of
selling texts to teachers

Usually the individual teacher
doesn't have the last word. Out of
an average of 30 new books to
choose from, the department

screening process include the
type of material covered and the
difficulty of the material
Because of new research, an
Introduction to Psychology text
may be as worthless as a new
edition of Theme and Form with
Othello dropped. Accounting 1[...]o whittle the
choice to three to five books. Cost

The majority rules. What ever
text the majority of the staff
votes for, becomes the depart-
ment’s choice for the course’s
basic text

But, what of the instructor who

choices of literature have to be

struction

There exists a district policy

Teachers, secretaries, the Dean
of Instruction and purchasing

when a book is replaced before
two years time of use. Teachers
have to justify any such action

After the Dean of Instruction
approves the text, the bookstore
submits to district a purchase
request for X amount of text. The
amount is based on past ex-
perience. W[...]the excess to use in his
classes

All the energy of selecting the
text is for the student. Con-
siderable amount of time and
energy are spent by teachers in
the selection of books. It all pays
off in the end when, with the help
of books, students do indeed
reach the objectives

From this column, the editors of this newspaper have
tried with little success, to reach the students and
faculty of this campus on issues that concern them, both
on[...]s a shout?

Often the subjects discussed here are of little or no
importance to anyone outside of the journalism
department. More often than not, though, we try to
express a responsible opinion on a subject of general

concern.

Well, as the saying goes, we a[...]it has the potential to bring about change.

Some of this reluctance in the past to respond to the
newspaper has been due to the social structure of the
campus. There are no dorms on this campus the[...]derstanding is that this paper is
under the thumb of the administration. Nothing could be
further from[...]xpressed here
don’t always have to be the ideas of the management

and staff of the paper.

Students, as you well know, have the[...]quakes, fires, sinking ships,
rampaging rats, and of course
sharks.

Within the last five years
movie-goers have had the thrill of
seeing practically all parts of
nature reduce man and the city to
waste. Despite[...]y
inside the industry sources
passed me this list of upcoming
thrillers :

“Freeway” - It’s the[...]eless
engineering, are trapped on an
enuless maze of freeways that let
unsuspecting motorists on, but
not off. Action sequences include
a 112 mile long line of stalled,
overheated autos.

“Claws” A young
v[...]g rate. He discloses
that cat owners, after years of
pressure from cat food com-
panies to feed their[...]ality foods like
milk. cheese, and expensive cuts
of meat, are turning housecats’

appetites and disposition into that
of maneating tigers.

“Depression: 1980"' - In_ this
highly improbable glimpse of the
future, the United States is in a
state of economic collapse with 73
per cent of the nation’s workers
unemployed and the remaini[...]opulace subdued by showing
them continuous reruns of old
disaster films

“Overkill” - Simple plot[...]ds quickly enveloping the
ship. Suddenly, because of an
undersea earthquake, a huge
tidal wave capsize[...]as the shark
happens to swim under the
President of the United States’
yacht. And ‘Tidal Wave"’[...]ms as if Americans have
finally accepted the idea of
women working in ‘‘men’s’’ jobs.

people and learn about the
culture of the Latin American

Rick said that some of the
interesting aspects of the Latin
American culture were the
openess and friendliness of the
people and the slower paced
atmosphere of the countries
“People weren't always
rushing."” commented Rick

One example of the friendliness
of the people was exhibited by
one family in Hermosi[...]e had taken up their
offers. because he got tired of
riding on the lonely roads

The laguage barrer wa[...]While travelling in Mexico City
Rick visited many of the sites and
was able to see the Mayan
Pyramids of Mexico and other
ancient ruins. His picture also[...]ex-
plained. Rick smiled over
the fact that many of the people
in the city were more open to him

celebrity

Another interesting aspect of
Mexico that Rick liked was the
open markets. One[...]m item imaginable was up for
sale. The low prices of the items
were another thing that pleased
Rick. A whole stock of bananas,
for example, cost only 40 cents in
American currency. A bottle of
coke was only three cents

Rick also noticed that[...]‘I did it’ and know he had ac-
complished one of his goals. Rick
wasn't too unhappy about this
trip through, because he said, he
had achieved two of his goals

campus, with a fair amount of the students here involved in par-
ticipating in them. Unfortunately, the rest of the vast number of
people going to Glendale can't seem to find it in[...]viously.

The purpose of the board is to establish policy and
direct expenditures of the district budget. The budget

president of the Phoenix College student government.

All the[...]son the ETP staff has elected not to back any one of
them in particular.

But we do feel that some of these points should be
expounded on.

Of all the candidates Muriel Small showed the most
e[...]shops.

Ms. Small showed an exceptional knowledge of both
the board’s and the district’s problems.[...]id lack some knowledge in the
particular problems of GCC.

Bob Robertson, on the other hand, has a better
knowledge of the immediate problems at Glendale but
does not have the extensive knowledge of Small’s
concerning the overall district. He doe[...]thy, has stated that
he has very little knowledge of the board and its
problems. McCarthy says that he[...]e are free to see him personally.

What ever kind of person you are looking for it is
apparent that you must get out and vote. We realize that
this sort of election seems meager to most people but it
is go[...]d and one
swing member you can see the importance of your vote.

The budget of $34 million can hardly be called meager
and neith[...]point in video history.
Is it possible to run out of good
ideas for creating entertaining
shows? One point in favor of such
an argument is the fact that
producers are creating a con-
tinuing line of “spin-offs”? from
proven successful shows.

children spent most of their six
weeks in England and in Europe,

significance to his position as a

Lecture series will expound on revolution

The theme of revolution draws
mixed emotions from Americans
in the year of the bicentennial.
This year’s free, open to the[...]een
“revolutionized in the con-
structive sense of the word.

Robert H. Wilcox, English
instructor at GCC, presented the
first lecture Wednesday, in-
troducing the theme and binding
force of this year’s series, “‘The
Importance of Revolution in
Human Culture.”

In the past these lectures in-
volved an instructor reviewing
the book of his or her choice,
whereas this year speakers wil[...]finance,
theology, and many more areas.
The theme of revolution will be
reflected in each of these

Wilcox explained that to many
people revolution means a
tearing down of something or
suggests violence. The Book
Review series impresses
revolution rather as an over-
turning of concepts in cuptural
activity, “in a positive, not a
political sense.”*

He explained that this type of

A cancer on the press

Freedom of the press is one of the most cherished
liberties we as American citiz[...]hen a newspaper starts
producing its own coverups of stories?

What we are referring to are the two lo[...]e Republic and Gazette, and their
recent blockade of stories concerning the Valley
National Bank’s loss of millions of dollars in unpaid
loans to one C. Arnholt Smith.

That sinful little underground paper which surfaces
out of Tempe each week, New Times, has recently
published a series of articles concerning Smith and his
involvement wit[...]ent. What we are referring to
is that elite group of self appointed guardians of com-
munity welfare, the Phoenix Forty. This is an
organization of business and civic leaders who meet in
secret council in the well fortified bastille of the Arizona
Biltmore.

The members of this elite group include Mason Walsh,
assistant publisher of the Phoenix papers, Loyal Meek,
editor of the Phoenix Gazette, ‘‘Pat’’ Murphy, edit[...]Radio-Television Inc.,
and Kar! Eller, president of Combined Communications
Inc., owners of KTAR.

The organization, which is made up of leading local
bankers, attorneys, businessmen and[...]ia people, includes some
stockholders and members of the board of directors of
VNB, including chairman, James B. Mayer.

It is quite obvious that a dangerous conflict of interest
does exist with the local media hierarch[...]hat if a press is to be free it must also be
free of ties with any power structure. The last thing the
press should do is become a member of that power
structure.

What kind of newspaper is it that prints an article
unfavorabl[...]profession like politics.

The news media is one of the few institutions left in
which the little man[...]er to their
knees. This is done through the power of public opinion
of which no force may defend against when it is aroused.

Stunts like t[...]dermine the credibility, and with that the power, of the
press.

Let it be said that the staff feels that the Phoenix
Gazette and the Arizona Republic have long been highly
respected newspape[...]e decision makers for these
papers remain members of the Phoenix Forty, the
respect for them is tarnis[...]ad virtually no effect

I'm not going to make fun of
our own cheerleaders, (At least I
think they exis[...]e damsels might as well be
performing “‘Dance of the
Mushrooms.”

At one time many years back I
actually participated, with
youthful ardor, in all of the

quandry as to who to vote for.

This is not the first instance of
electoral apathy. The past few

three candidates only one could
find the cour[...]r one (and I hope I am
not the only one) am tired of each
candidate’s political speech
being an instant replay of the
opposing candidates’. It will be a
day of hope when a candidate
takes a staunch stand on
anything, instead of trying to
please all the people all the time

referring to politics, to think in
terms of rip-off, dishonesty, lies,
and deceit. Recent his[...]loud surrounding
the political scene to the point of
zero - visibility

greater awareness of what the

McCarthy countered Robertson's
way of having answers for almost

choice of candidates.

Apathy defended

The subject of apathy on the Glendale campus has to be one of the
most worn out subjects, this editorial column[...]s?

Actually there are very few subjects that are of any importance at
GCC except those that apply to a certain group of people. Our
newspaper often finds it hard to find[...]r energy on unless you have something to
gain out of it.

We would be willing to bet that if you ask every one on campus what
they thought of Glendale most would say it is a great place to go[...]ull.

criticism. Initially I must

response, especially from local
gun owners.

Because of it’s decidedly
negative view of the hunter, I was
sure that every Arizona imitation
cowpoke or good ol’ boy with a
rifle[...]in the local papers.

Every comment and criticism
of the hunter’s reasoning and
motivation has been[...]was almost nil. They
could not really be accused of
dropping the ball, because they
never got to the[...]good candidates. I suspect many
people felt none of the candidates
were worth starting up their cars
and driving to the polls for.

This is where the people of not

and even outdated. In many
cases all of these assumptions
are correct, and still, in many[...]high,
savoring the back-slapping
congratulations of fellow hunts-
men. It is reinforcemenit of man’s
supremacy.

Hunters actually get a thrill out

The recent vote by the United Nations which recognizes Zionism as a
form of racial discrimination marks the further decline of the major
powers of the west in controlling world affairs.

Their continued exploitation of resources from these smaller

the journalism courses offered at GCC and have been impressed

Lastly is the seeming lack of faith in the manner in which

probably has more myths and
misconceptions associated with it
than with any other aspect of

To do away with the myths and
